It's thick glass, but not terribly heavy and can rest on its bottom or on its side. I bought two I am using mine for kombucha, my first batch is done and came out just right, the second batch now in this jar. i like the thick cork tops. i do often bake cookies, so i may use the second jar for that purpose, when laid on its side it looks just like the old candy jars they had in the 50s at places like Woolworth and Kress Co. (if any of you remember).
